Most people sizing up a trailer for a car ask one question: will it fit? Width and length are easy to eyeball. The thing that catches low cars is not width, it is angle. This car loading clearance calculator checks the angle problem that a tape measure alone will miss.

What the break-over problem actually is

A lowered car can sit well inside the deck's footprint and still drag hard on the way up the ramp. There are two separate places it scrapes, and a proper check has to look at both.

The first is the front lip, or splitter, catching the ramp as the car starts its climb. That is governed by the ramp approach angle: the steeper the ramp, the more likely the nose digs in. The second is the belly touching down at the hump where the ramp meets the deck. That is the break-over clearance, and it bites cars with a low underbody and a short wheelbase.

Lowered cars are exposed on every front. An aftermarket splitter hangs low and far forward. Coilovers or bags drop the belly closer to the ground. And the ramp angle a low sports car can handle is small, because a short wheelbase sharpens the break-over right where the car crests the hump. Get it wrong and the bill is real: a torn splitter or bent lip runs well past two thousand dollars, and a hard belly strike can crease a frame rail and total the car.

The result comes back as one of three states. CLEARS means the car loads with margin to spare. MARGINAL means it clears on paper but with little room, so slow down and use a spotter. SCRAPES means it does not clear as measured, and the tool then tells you how far to raise the tongue to fix it. Front Lip (Approach)
What it is
The ramp approach angle, the steepest ramp the nose can climb before the splitter touches.
When it matters
Long front overhangs and low splitters. If the ramp is steeper than this angle, the front lip marker turns red.
How to measure
Set by ground clearance and front overhang: the lower and longer the nose, the tighter it gets.
Break-Over (Belly)
What it is
The break-over clearance, the angle the belly can span at the hump where the ramp meets the deck.
When it matters
Low, short cars. If the ramp-to-deck transition is sharper than the car can span, the belly marker turns red.
How to measure
Set by ground clearance and wheelbase: a short wheelbase sharpens the hump the belly must cross.

Both points have to clear, and whichever angle is tighter is the one that decides the loading. It is not always the one you expect. A car with a huge front splitter might be limited by the front lip, while a bagged car sitting flat might be limited by the belly. Raising the tongue helps both at once: lifting the coupler tilts the deck nose-up, and because the ramp is hinged to the deck, the ramp flattens by the same amount, so both markers move toward green together.

A worked example: a lowered sports car

Picture a lowered Miata, dropped about two inches on coilovers: lowest front point around 4.5 inches, front overhang about 34 inches, wheelbase roughly 91 inches. The trailer is a common open car hauler with an 18 inch deck and a 72 inch ramp.

  1. 1Enter the numbers. Type the three car measurements and the three trailer measurements into the fields.
  2. 2Read the angles. The front-lip approach lands near 7.5 degrees, the break-over near 11 degrees, so the front lip is the tighter limit. The ramp at rest is about 14.5 degrees, well above 7.5, so the result is SCRAPES and the front lip marker is red.
  3. 3Apply the fix. The tool says to raise the tongue until the deck tilts about 8.5 degrees nose-up. That flattens the ramp to roughly 6 degrees, under the car's 7.5 degree limit. Type 8.5 into the tilt field and watch both markers turn green.
  4. 4Check the cushion. The margin lands near plus 1.5 degrees, not zero. That is deliberate: the bare minimum would flatten the ramp to exactly the car's limit with no room for measurement error or an uneven driveway, so the tool aims a degree and a half past it.

Safety and what to do before you load

Raising the tongue changes how the trailer sits, so set it up deliberately first:

  • Trailer on level ground, wheels chocked, rear support jacks down.
  • Measure your ride height twice. A lowered car with a full tank or a passenger sits differently than one on the lift.
  • Load on flat ground, not a sloped driveway that adds angle you did not plan for.
  • Go slow, and have someone watch the front lip and the belly as the car crests the hump.

An unblocked trailer can roll when you lift the tongue, and a lowered ramp end taking the car's weight without support puts heavy load on the ramp hinge, which is why that setup matters.

When to use longer ramps instead

Sometimes tilt cannot save it. If the required tongue lift is more than your jack can manage, or the tool reports the car will not clear even adjusted, the ramp is simply too short for that deck height. Common questions

What if I have air suspension?

Enter your loaded, lowered ride height, the height the car will actually be at when you drive it onto the ramp. If you plan to air up before loading, measure at that raised height instead. The calculator only knows the number you give it.

What if my car is bagged?

Same idea. Use your real clearance at the ride height you will load at, not the factory figure. A bagged car aired out can sit an inch or two lower than anything on the spec sheet, and that is exactly the number that decides whether the belly clears when loading a lowered car onto a trailer.

Can I load from the side or at an angle?

No. This check is for straight-on loading up a single ramp. Loading at an angle changes the geometry in ways the tool does not model, and it tends to make scraping worse, because one corner leads and digs in first.

What does a negative margin mean?

A negative clearance margin means the car scrapes at that ramp angle. If raising the tongue brings it positive, load with that tilt. If it stays negative even at full tilt, the ramp is too steep for the car, and you need a longer ramp or loading boards.
